Professor Moriggl is a Specialist in Anatomy, particularly interested in Clinical Anatomy. Most of the research he has done (over 70 original articles so far) was and is related to this discipline of anatomy. Professor Moriggl started his University career in 1986 in Innsbruck and has done ultrasonography ever since. Some of Professor Moriggl's former scholars are practically concerned with ultrasonography. Professor Moriggl has had clinical training, especially in diagnostic imaging. This practical background was the starting point of his constantly increasing engagement in regional anesthesia and pain medicine. In 2008 he has become one of the founding members of a Special Interest Group for Ultrasound in Pain Medicine within the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and is now its Educational Director. Apart from scientific publications he has done numerous contributions for books and booklets on regional anesthesia and pain medicine (e.g. Practical Guide by Vincent Chan as well as to the pocket-book on Principals and Practical Implementation by Peter Marhofer). More recently he authored the chapter "Spine Anatomy and Sonoanatomy for Pain Physicians" within the Atlas of Ultrasound-Guided Procedures in Interventional Pain Management, released in January 2011 (Springer; Ed. Samer Narouze). Since January 2015, Professor Moriggl is Chair of the Research Committee of the World Academy of Pain Medicine Ultrasonography (WAPMU). Moreover, he was inaugural examiner of the first CIPS-Exam (Certified Interventional Pain Sonology) during the 1st Annual WAPMU Congress in Miami, FL
